Construction Site PPE Safety Checklist

Head Protection
- Hard hats available and in sufficient quantity for all workers
- Hard hats are ANSI/ISEA Z89.1 rated (Type I or Type II)
- Hard hat shells inspected — no cracks, dents, or deformation
- Suspension systems intact, undamaged, and properly adjusted
- Hard hats replaced if over 5 years old (shell) or 2 years (suspension)
- Hard hats labeled with worker name / assignment
- Bump caps NOT used in areas requiring full hard hat protection
- Hard hat accessories (face shields, earmuff attachments) compatible and approved
Eye & Face Protection
- Safety glasses available — ANSI Z87.1 rated
- Safety glasses lenses free of scratches, cracks, or fogging
- Side shields present where required (overhead, flying debris)
- Chemical splash goggles available where needed
- Face shields available for grinding, cutting, and chemical handling
- Welding helmets and filter lenses at correct shade rating
- UV-rated eyewear available for outdoor / rooftop workers
- Workers wearing corrective lenses have proper OTG (over-the-glass) safety glasses
Hand Protection — Gloves
- General-purpose leather/cotton gloves available for handling materials
- Cut-resistant gloves (ANSI A4+) available for sharp material handling
- Chemical-resistant gloves available at chemical storage and mixing areas
- Electrical insulating gloves available and tested for electrical workers
- Heat-resistant gloves available for hot work and welding
- Gloves inspected — no tears, holes, or compromised seams
- Workers NOT wearing gloves around rotating machinery / drill presses
- Proper glove size available to ensure dexterity and grip
Foot & Leg Protection
- Steel-toe or composite-toe boots (ASTM F2413) required and enforced on site
- Boots have slip-resistant soles appropriate for site conditions
- Electrical hazard (EH) rated boots available for electrical workers
- Metatarsal guards available in heavy material handling areas
- Puncture-resistant midsoles in boots for nail / rebar areas
- Waterproof or chemical-resistant boots available as needed
- Boots inspected — no sole separation, torn uppers, or damaged toe caps
- Gaiters / chaps available for chainsaw or concrete cutting work
High-Visibility & Body Protection
- High-visibility vests or garments (ANSI/ISEA 107) available for all workers
- Class 2 or Class 3 hi-vis required near vehicle / equipment traffic
- Hi-vis garments free of fading, tears, or obscured reflective striping
- Tyvek / disposable coveralls available for insulation, spray, and chemical tasks
- Flame-resistant (FR) clothing available for hot work and electrical arc exposure
- Chemical-resistant aprons or suits available at chemical mixing areas
- Rain gear / cold-weather gear available for outdoor workers
- Workers not wearing loose clothing near rotating equipment
Respiratory Protection
- N95 / P100 filtering facepiece respirators available for dust exposure
- Half-face or full-face respirators available for chemical vapor exposure
- Respirator cartridges matched to hazard (organic vapor, acid gas, particulate)
- Powered air-purifying respirators (PAPR) available for high-exposure tasks
- Workers fit-tested for tight-fitting respirators (annually or on change of face shape)
- Respirators inspected — straps, seals, and valves intact
- Respirator storage area clean, dry, and away from contamination
- Workers medically cleared to wear respirators (employer written program in place)
Hearing Protection
- Foam earplugs (NRR 29+) available in sufficient quantity
- Earmuff hearing protectors available where long-duration exposure is expected
- Hearing protection required in areas exceeding 85 dB TWA
- Noise monitoring / signage posted at high-noise equipment and areas
- Disposable earplugs stored hygienically (not loose in pockets)
- Earmuff cups and cushions inspected — no cracks or compressed foam
- Workers aware of the buddy system for hazardous noise areas
- Hearing protection program posted and communicated to all workers
Fall Protection
- Full-body harnesses (ANSI Z359.11) available for all workers at height > 6 ft
- Harnesses inspected before each use — stitching, buckles, D-rings, webbing intact
- Self-retracting lifelines (SRL) or shock-absorbing lanyards available
- Anchor points rated at 5,000 lbs per worker or engineered equivalent
- Horizontal lifelines installed by qualified person where required
- Guardrails (42" height, midrail, toeboard) in place at open edges
- Safety nets installed below leading edges where harness use is impractical
- Harnesses and lanyards removed from service after any fall event
- Workers trained in harness donning, inspection, and rescue procedures
- Rescue plan posted and rescue equipment accessible on site
PPE Storage & Program
- PPE storage area clean, organized, and clearly labeled
- PPE inventory log current — quantities on hand documented
- Replacement PPE available on site — no waiting for reorder
- Damaged or expired PPE removed from service and disposed of properly
- PPE hazard assessment completed and on file (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.132)
- Written PPE program available to all workers
- Workers trained on proper use, limitations, and care of PPE
- PPE training records on file for each employee
- PPE issuance log maintained (date, item, worker signature)
- Visitor / short-term worker PPE available at site entrance
